HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister meets with the World Health Organization Director-General

His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, met today with Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the World Health Organization Director-General.

HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad highlighted the Kingdom’s commitment to advancing its health sector by enhancing medical treatments and ensuring efficiency and sustainability. This aligns with the far-reaching vision of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

His Royal Highness noted the Kingdom’s efforts to modernise and strengthen its healthcare sector as a key pillar of national development. HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to delivering exceptional healthcare and medical services while staying at the forefront of scientific and technological advancements.

HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad underscored the Kingdom’s strategic partnerships with leading international health institutions and organisations. These collaborations play a key role in upskilling the national workforce and enhancing the quality of healthcare services in the Kingdom.

During the meeting, discussions covered several healthcare-related topics, including the Kingdom’s recent medical milestone—the successful treatment of the world’s first sickle cell disease patient outside the United States using Casgevy (exagamglogene autotemcel), a CRISPR-based gene-editing therapy that utilises bone marrow transplantation technology. In this regard, HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad emphasised the importance of aligning efforts with the Kingdom’s healthcare strategic goals through well-structured plans and an integrated scientific approach.

His Royal Highness reaffirmed the Kingdom’s commitment to further collaboration with international health institutions, including the WHO, to develop innovative healthcare solutions and strengthen Bahrain’s position as a regional hub for leading healthcare services.

For his part, Dr Ghebreyesus expressed his gratitude for His Royal Highness’s dedication to strengthening cooperation between the Kingdom and the WHO. The WHO Director-General concluded by wishing the Kingdom of Bahrain continued progress and prosperity.

HE Shaikh Salman bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, the Minister of Finance and National Economy, and HE Dr Jaleela bint Al Sayed Jawad Hasan, Minister of Health, attended the meeting.
